The methane gas explosion ripped through the mine in western Ukraine’s Lviv region at 12.45pm (local time).
Emergency services said 34 miners were at a depth of 550 metres when disaster struck.
A total of 172 miners work at the site.
It comes just months after 17 people died in an explosion in China’s Mongolia region.
The blast in December left people underground for days in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang.
